Basic Tracing Tips for Fitting

In our video below, Mike Scott demonstrates an effective and industry-standard way of making tracings of the horse’s back to determine potential correct saddle fit and selection of an English saddle.

You’ll need these very important things:

1. A handler for the horse other than the person doing the tracings.

2. The clean horse, standing on a firm and level surface with as close to “square” feet as possible. Head in a straight-forward and “calm” position – not too low and not too high.

3. A table or flat surface to draw and write on, white chalk or white kid’s paint, pen or pencil, the flexible ruler tracing tool and a manila folder or a VERY large piece of paper (with center, left and right properly marked – including horse’s name and owner name, and date).

Around the 7 minute mark we have a very important demonstration of the amount of pressure involved in creating a successful tracing for saddle fit.
